Amish Mafia

Co-incidence or dumb co-incidence, we stumbled on the Discovery Channel series "Amish Mafia" less than 24 hours ago, and we just saw an exploding Amish buggy clip from the series on the Daily Show!

The Daily Show shares our view that the Discovery Channel has become a waste of airwaves or cable bandwidth, much like we have thought for several years.

TheEditor is known to have a soft spot for the Amish, in part because the language they speak among themselves sounds so much like home and evokes a simpler and therefore better past. When TheEditor saw the series title "Amish Mafia", a resounding "f****ing impossible" reverberated through the old house.

Naturally, we had to check it out. It took five to ten minutes for the confirmation "yeah, f***ing impossible" to be heard. The series features former Amish, a few Mennonites and lots of English. English is what the Amish call the inhabitants of the non-Amish world around them.

Having finished the first episode of the series, we handed over to the Random Research team. Our google-eyed glorified typists unearthed some fact checks about the series, and the whole team got together for a unanimous verdict: hogwash.

The world of the Amish certainly is not perfect but vastly preferable over the Discovery Channel version. We cannot help but wonder if the creators of the series toyed with the title "Real Housewives of Amish Country" and only dismissed it because their mafia concept allows for more out-of-thin-air story lines.
